DeGeneres And De Rossi Wed In California

Posted in Advocate Articles, Gay Rights at 2:28 pm by pikapp44

Since California legalized same-sex marriage, Ellen DeGeneres, 50, Portia de Rossi, 35, wed Saturday night in an intimate ceremony at their Beverly Hills home.

After the California Supreme Court’s ruling in May, the talk-show host announced that she and de Rossi would wed after four years together.

The ceremony was attended by 19 guests, including DeGeneres’ mom, Betty, and de Rossi’s mother, Margaret Rogers, who had flown in from Australia.

While opponents in California have gathered signatures to put a measure on the November ballot for a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, Hollywood was throwing its support behind the newlyweds.

Top Calif. judge faces backlash over gay marriage Will have to mount aggressive campaign to retain seat in 2010

Posted in Advocate Articles, Gay Rights at 3:41 pm by pikapp44

California Chief Justice Ronald George has spent more than half his life cultivating an image of a cautious jurist and earning a reputation as a politically skilled court administrator.

But his unlikely legacy as gay rights pioneer was sealed May 15, when he heard the roar of a crowd gathered below his office as his majority decision legalizing same-sex marriage was announced.
Now, the law-and-order supporter of capital punishment is enduring from gay marriage foes the very complaints of “judicial activism” he has worked so hard to avoid during his 17 years on the high court and 34 years as a California judge.
He will likely have to mount an aggressive and expensive campaign to retain his seat in the 2010 election.

“Gay Street” Keeping Its Name

Posted in Advocate Articles, Gay Rights at 12:24 pm by pikapp44

A request made by Second Baptist Church of San Antonio to change the name of Gay Street, which runs adjacent to the church’s property, was denied by the city council on Thursday, reports WOAI TV.

The church wanted to rename the street “Second Baptist Way” in a supposed effort to reach out to the community. Many involved, though — including attorney Rosie Gonzales, who participated in the hearing — suspect the reason for the request had more to do with the controversial existing name than it did with outreach efforts.

Gay Street was named after a prominent community activist, and those who live on the street and in the general area have requested the street keep its name as a tribute.

At the hearing at City Hall on Thursday, the request was ultimately denied by a nearly unanimous vote. According to WOAI, city councilwoman Sheila McNeil requested that the name change be denied, and the council agreed.

Florida Governer Announces Support of Amendment 2 Against Gay Marriage

Posted in Advocate Articles, Gay Rights at 3:35 pm by pikapp44

Governor Charlie Crist’s “live and let live” policy regarding the constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage in Florida is now a thing of the past.
A Crist spokesman confirmed that the governor is undeniably supporting Amendment 2. On Monday, Crist made a statement during an impromptu barbershop Q & A with reporters. When asked his position on Amendment 2, Crist’s reply was surprisingly clear. “I support it,” he said.

Withers: Florida legislator has anti-gay past

Posted in Advocate Articles, Gay Rights at 2:26 pm by pikapp44

There is a video clip of  Democratic Florida legislator Darryl Rouson, who was a Republican at the time, at a political round table going on some anti-gay rant.

When the topic of gays and lesbians adopting children came up, Rouson noted he was convinced being gay was “morally wrong” and then he went all legal scholar with this little ditty:

“The law is supposed to discriminate sometimes, in some respects, it is supposed to discriminate against social order and anarchy.”

Let’s get the obvious out of the way: Rouson’s legal theorizing is nutty and it’s scary he helps in law making.
As for his homophobia, he joins a long list of pols who resort to anti-gay language.
None of this means we shouldn’t stand up to homophobia no matter who spouts it, but it’s time for some political maturity.

Survey: Gays Want Suburban Life, Diverse Society

Posted in Advocate Articles, Gay Portal at 2:07 pm by pikapp44

Nearly 80% of gays think it’s important to integrate into the greater culture, and at least 64% are open about their sexual orientation to at least one family member, according to survey results released Tuesday by Logo TV network.

A majority said they would prefer to live in suburbia as opposed to a city, though 58% said they would prefer to live closer to other gay people. Marriage equality, the environment, health care, and the economy are the top four issues that LGBT voters are concerned about.

Two thirds of younger gays expect to be in a long-term relationship with children.

The survey, in partnership with Tru Research, included people ages 21-45 in New York and Dallas as well as research by Simmons Market Research Bureau that included 1,800 LGBT people ages 21-59.

Record number of LGBT delegates to Democratic convention

Posted in Advocate Articles, Gay Portal at 12:42 pm by pikapp44

A record number of LGBT delegates will attend the Democratic National Convention in Denver, according to the party’s gay wing, the National Stonewall Democrats.

It is expected that more than 350 LGBT participants will attend the convention.

This would represent approximately 6 percent of total convention attendees and is a 27 percent increase from the 282 LGBT participants who attended the Democratic National Convention in Boston in 2004.

“The Democratic Party is being positively shaped by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender advocates who believe in Democratic principles of fair play, hard work, security at home and equal opportunity for all,” said Jon Hoadley, Stonewall Democrats Executive Director.

“The Democratic National Convention is an avenue for our community to participate in civic life and advance the values that the majority of Americans share. Many of our brightest elected officials, chapter leaders and party officers began their participation in Democratic politics as delegates to past conventions and by increasing the number of LGBT participants, we are growing the ranks of future Democratic leaders,”  she said.
