In the middle of the chaos in Boston, theBoy Scouts of America announced that it would ask its national council board in May to vote to end the ban on openly gay scouts. But the proposed baby step forward with another step not taken could result in no real change at all.
First the baby step. According to The Post, the BSA resolution says that “no youth may be denied membership in the Boy Scouts of America on the basis of sexual orientation or preference alone.†That’s great. But it’s the word “alone†that troubles me. That’s a loophole for chartered organizations to use as a cover for maintaining the status quo.
“Under the new resolution, the Boy Scouts will continue to bar adult leaders ‘who are open or avowed homosexuals or who engage in behavior that would become a distraction to the mission of the BSA.’†“Avowed homosexuals What “behavior†would be a distraction to the mission of the BSA that has to do with being gay? Those who think homosexuality is synonymous with pedophilia are beyond help.
Gay men and lesbians have children participating in BSA. Being active and involved in their sons’ activities is vital. For those gay men who were scouts as boys, staying involved is essential to who they are as men, as citizens. Therefore, allowing troops to accept gay scouts only to bar them from leadership once they become adults is no progress at all.
